BADEN, ON – Since 1970, Earth Day has been celebrated annually on April 22, to raise awareness about environmental issues and encourage people to take action towards sustainability. Earth Day encourages us all to take simple steps towards reducing our carbon footprint, protecting wildlife and biodiversity, and promoting cleaner environments.
This Earth Day, the Township of Wilmot is thrilled to present the first-ever free tree giveaway program, Wilmot Roots.
This community initiative is the result of a generous donation of funds from Enova Power Corporation to help reforest the Township. With the ongoing organizational support of the volunteer-based Let’s Tree Wilmot group, the Township is proud to offer approximately 230 free trees for Wilmot residents to plant on their property this spring.
Starting today, until Thursday, April 20 or while supplies last, residents can register online at wilmot.ca/WilmotRoots on a first come first serve basis to select their preferred tree species. Five species of trees will be available with a limit of one free tree per household or two per farm. Tree pick up is scheduled to take place on Earth Day, Saturday, April 22, between 9:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m.
“Planting more trees throughout our community benefits the Township as whole by reducing air pollution, providing buffers from natural disasters, fighting climate change through carbon reduction, and boosting our physical and mental health,” said Sandy Jackson, Director of Community Services for the Township of Wilmot. “We want to thank Enova Power and the dedicated group of volunteers with Let’s Tree Wilmot for assisting with this important community initiative. Tree planting is an important investment in the future health and well-being of our community and the planet.”
