Here is a recap of the fabulous lineup on July 1.
The Canada Day event took place at William Scott Park at 75 Hunter Street in New Hamburg.
Sunrise Ceremony
The day began with a traditional Indigenous Sunrise Ceremony at 7 a.m. at the boat launch. It was led by an Elder from Crow Shield Lodge along with a Firekeeper.
Signs that include all 94 Calls to Action led to the site. People sat or stood in a Ceremonial Circle.
Official Ceremony
The official opening ceremony took place at 11 a.m. It featured O Canada sung by Joanna Guistini-Wilkinson and Danielle Guistini-Crouse as well as performances by the New Hamburg Legion Colour Party and the New Hamburg Concert Band.
The Township of Wilmot's Mayor Natasha Salonen and Councillors welcomed everyone, including Kitchener-Conestoga MP Tim Louis who shared Canada Day greetings.
At 11:30 a.m., the Mayor and Councillors served free Canada Day cake.
Fun for Everyone
The event included community groups; bouncy castles; potato sack races; face-painting; an egg-and-spoon race; a scavenger hunt; three-legged races; bubble-making; an activity table; and a dunk tank.
Water Wheel Event
The New Hamburg Board of Trade hosted a ceremony starting at 12:30 p.m. to celebrate the reconstruction of the New Hamburg Water Wheel.
