The Township of Wilmot is committed to providing safe roads for the travelling public during the winter season using efficient, economical and environmentally friendly methods.
Roads
The Roads division is responsible for approximately 250 km of rural and urban roads. Winter maintenance of Township roads is completed in accordance with the Ontario Minimum Maintenance Standards for Ontario Highways.
Roads are patrolled frequently during the winter months to monitor conditions and deploy equipment and materials as necessary.
Municipal parking lots
The Township contracts out the winter maintenance of municipal parking lots. Overnight parking in these lots is prohibited.
Mailboxes
Please assist the snowplow operators by making sure;
- The bottom of your mailbox is, at minimum, 107- 114cm (42”- 45”) above the road, based on Canada Post regulations
- It is in a good state of repair and not an obstruction
- The mailbox must be able to withstand the impact of snow/slush
If your mailbox is damaged by direct contact of the plow or wing during winter maintenance activities please contact the Roads Supervisor who will review the situation and determine if a replacement is warranted based on the mailbox replacement policy.
Sidewalks
The Township clears sidewalks in front of municipal property, walkways and along back lotted properties. Remember all property owners are required to remove snow and ice from sidewalks adjacent to their property within 24 hours of a winter storm. If you need help clearing the snow from your sidewalks, please contact Community Care Concepts at 855-664-1900.
Five things to remember during the winter
- Fire Hydrants If a fire hydrant near your property is buried by drifts or snow banks please dig it out or contact the Public Works Department.
- Windrows We understand your frustration when you clear your driveway and then a snowplow comes by and leaves a pile of snow - a windrow. Unfortunately it is impossible to clear snow from the roads without leaving one.
- Parking
- Parked cars are a snowplow operator's biggest obstacle. If your street has not been plowed please do not park on it. Parking is prohibited from December 1 and March 31 between 2:30 a.m. and 6:00 a.m., or when a Snow Event is declared. During the winter months By-Law Enforcement will be actively enforcing this in order to eliminate any conflict with the snowplows. Failure to abide to this policy may result in a fine or your vehicle being towed.
- Please do not park on the road after 6:30 a.m. if the street has not been plowed. We do not return to subdivisions the same day where cars have been parked to clean up those areas. When you park your car on the street it does not keep the windrow away from your driveway, in fact the next time the snowplow is around the snow will be wet and heavier from the slush and ice chunks that will develop.
- Dumping/Pushing Snow onto Roadways It is illegal to deposit snow from your property onto the roadway under the Highway Traffic Act.
- Patience When plowing operations begin the operators are following routes that have been designed to minimize duplication and maximize efficiency. The length of time to complete a route varies however, it may take approximately five hours without an excessive amount of snow.
