A legislative requirement of the Fire Protection and Prevention act is the delivery of a Smoke alarm Program. The Ontario Fire Marshalls Office has implemented a "zero tolerance policy" for occupancies requiring smoke alarms.
Education is a critical component of any smoke alarm program. Not only must homeowners be educated about smoke alarm types, placement, installation and maintenance, they also must be informed of the Fire Code requirements and the consequences for non-compliance.
Wilmot firefighters have a strategy to deliver this program over the course of a few years to all residents by visiting door to door. I
In many instances, fire crews responding to fire calls in residential dwellings can check to ensure the home is in compliance with the fire code smoke alarm requirements. If a fire has occurred, lives have been put at risk. If that homeowner fails to install working smoke alarms and a fire has occurred, they could be issued an offence notice in the value of $360.00.
Our goals and objectives with the program are to prevent fires and educate the residents of Wilmot Township. We will be providing information regarding Carbon Monoxide Awareness at the same time to ensure residents are also complying with this new legislative requirement.
